My Platform:  Creating Hope for Tomorrow: Winning Against Diabetes

I partner with the American Diabetes Association as a youth advocate to promote my platform:  Creating Hope for Tomorrow: Winning Against Diabetes. I founded this program because many of my family members live with the struggles of diabetes and my Uncle Adam passed away at the young age of 21 due to complications with the disease. For more information visit my links tab to learn about finnancial aid, support groups, and healthcare for diabetes. Here I have listed the essential information about diabetes:

  • There are 26 million individuals in America living with diabetes.

  • Seventy-nine million people in the U.S. have prediabetes, and only 50% of them are actually aware.

  • Type 1 diabetes is developed at an early age and is developed due to genetics.

  • Type 2 diabetes is usually developed in teens and adults, and this type of Diabetes can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.

  • Warning Signs of diabetes: blurred vison, unusual thirst, slow healing cuts, tiredness, frequent urination, numbness, and nausea.

  • If diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes you should: limit your intake of sweets, request a referral for a certified dietician, eat healthy, exercise regularly, increase your fiber intake, and get a prescription for a glucometer (measures amount of glucose in the blood).

  • To reduce your risk of diabetes: abstain from smoking and drinking alcohol, maintain a healthy body weight (BMI between 18.5 and 24.9), exercise 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes, and maintain a healthy diet.
